AARP Endorses Chiropractic

AARP, a membership organization leading positive social change and delivering value to people age 50 and over through information, advocacy, and service, is presently selling a form of Aetna health insurance. Normally, this would not mean much, but since this particular sales initiative is using chiropractic to engage its audience, we thought you may be interested. On AARP’s return envelope, it features a photo of a spine and a statement that reads: “Never thought I would need a chiropractor. Good thing I have a wide network of providers.”

This represents a change among the population. The public is beginning to recognize the benefits of chiropractic and patients are making it known that chiropractic care is among their favorites in healthcare!

Meet The Staff

Dr. Mark Jensen grew up in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, a small town in the southeastern part of the state.  During his childhood, he participated in many sports such as football, basketball, baseball, track, and hockey.  He later became involved in golf and rugby as well and has been no stranger to sports injuries.  These injuries and a knack for science and biology led to an interest in health care, although it was an auto accident while attending the University of Minnesota that led to his first chiropractic experience.  So impressed by the quality of the care and the 100% natural approach of chiropractic, he accepted the challenge of becoming a Chiropractor.  Six years later in 1996, he graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minnesota with both Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees.
Following graduation, Dr. Jensen relocated from Minnesota to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where, as an associate with Hammer Chiropractic, he treated thousands of patients young and old suffering auto accident and athletic injuries, neck and low back pain, headaches, TMJ, sciatica, disc injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome, among many other conditions.  After nine years of practice in Rocky Mount, Dr. Jensen decided to open his own office in Raleigh, and in October 2006, opened Corrective Chiropractic.
Corrective Chiropractic is conveniently located in the Glenwood South area of downtown Raleigh.  This beautiful office offers state of the art technology used to detect and correct posture and spinal dysfunction, utilizing computerized thermal and muscle testing and high-speed full spine x-ray as well as spinal traction.  Dr. Jensen uses several spinal adjusting techniques (Diversified, Gonstead, and CBP) as well as soft tissue adjusting techniques (active myofascial release, trigger point therapy and electric stimulation).  Neuromuscular retraining and exercise are also used to help retrain the body to healthier patterns of function.
Corrective Chiropractic is a large chiropractic office that services many Raleigh families.    Dr. Jensen’s mission through Corrective Chiropractic is to educate and adjust as many families toward optimal health using natural chiropractic care.  To fulfill this purpose, Dr. Jensen provides education through classes in his office and at venues around town such as the YWCA and Target.  He is also active at many local health fairs and 5K races around Raleigh; he further donates his time in support of the Raleigh Rugby Club (2007 Division II National Rugby Champions) and is available to speak to local organizations and office groups about natural and proactive health care.
Continuing education is important to Dr. Jensen who consistently reads chiropractic journals for the latest news and health updates, and attends seminars throughout the country to study the latest information and techniques for the benefit of his patients.
Dr. Jensen resides in Raleigh and enjoys sports of all kinds.  In his free time, he can often be found traveling with his fiancee, Kelly or at home cooking and hanging out with their dogs.

Marcia Petersen has been working here since December 2010.  My husband Michael and I moved down here from Chicago, IL to be closer to our son, daughter-in-law and 3 precious grandchildren.  I am very thankful to have a career that I have a passion for and love.  Born in Kalamazoo, MI, moved to Athens Ohio where I went to college at OU.

I have a degree in Science. Got married had a son and when he was 5 months old we moved to Boca Raton, FL.  That’s when I fell in love with the ocean and palm trees, warm weather etc.  We then moved back to Chicago, IL.  I love living here in Raleigh, the people are so kind and we have made friends and created special bonds. We also get to see our grandchildren whenever we want to.
When I am not working, you will find me with my husband, grandkids, family, friends or
enjoying working around our home.  I love God, relaxing at parks or lakes, power walking, riding bikes, naps, dancing & music.  My very favorite activity is swimming in the ocean! I love vacations that involve flying to sunshine, beaches, and warm weather!!!

Wellness Care Versus The Standard Approach

The main difference between wellness care and standard medical care is that wellness care seeks to turn on the natural healing ability. Wellness care does not add something to the system, instead, it removes anything that might interfere with normal function. Wellness care trusts that the body would know what to do if nothing were interfering with it. Standard medical care, on the other hand, seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside – a medication, a surgery or procedure.

Inside Out vs. Outside In

If a patient has high blood pressure, a standard medical approach would be to choose a drug that lowers blood pressure and ask the patient to take the drug. This may serve to lower the blood pressure, but ignores the underlying cause that is making the blood pressure high, and runs the risk of side effects complicating the person’s recovery. Whether it’s a nutritional issue, faulty control by the nerve system or a manifestation of stress, the medication could decrease the blood pressure, leaving the problem causing the symptom of high blood pressure unaddressed.

The Wellness Approach

Wellness is a state of optimal conditions for normal function… and then some. The wellness approach is to look for underlying causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments would optimize the conditions for normal function. That environment encourages natural healing and minimizes the need for invasive treatment, which should be administered only when absolutely necessary. When the body is working properly, it tends to heal effectively, no matter what the condition. When the body heals well and maintains itself well, then there is another level of health that goes beyond “asymptomatic” or “pain-free” which reveals an open-ended opportunity for vitality, vibrant health, and an enhanced experience of life.

Subluxation

A vertebral subluxation can be caused by any force that the human body cannot adapt to. Such examples include auto accidents, work-related injuries, stress, sports, and repetitive movements even the birth process.

Correction Of Subluxations

Chiropractic is a health care system that is founded on the premise that proper functioning nervous system is essential to overall health and function of the human body. Doctors of Chiropractic detect and correct vertebral subluxations by physically adjusting the spine. This restores the nervous system to an optimum level of function, which maximizes the body’s inherent healing potential.

Chiropractic adjustments restore normal nerve function; improve spinal biomechanics, a range of motion, reflex arcs, and posture, all of which are essential to a properly functioning nervous system. Doctors of Chiropractic have never claimed that they can “cure” illnesses and other related conditions, and not all health problems can be attributed to vertebral subluxations, but clinical and case study research has demonstrated that correcting subluxations can lead to an improvement and restoration of health.

A Doctor of Chiropractic performs an adjustment on a patient. Research has shown that all age groups can benefit from Chiropractic care.
