Health Myths

How many times have you heard someone say My mother had arthritis, that’s why I have it?  We now believe, through scientific technology, that many diseases are inherited. Genes for specific diseases have been recognized via gene mapping. Many of you may know or have heard of women who have had total bilateral mastectomies, completely prophylactically, because their mothers died of breast cancer, firmly believing that they could not avoid the same fate.

Let’s take a closer look at this issue. If having a gene for any illness condemns you to have that disease, then why are you not born with the disease you are coded to have? Why isn’t every person who carries a gene for disease suffering at all times from that disease? The answer is that all genes do not express themselves at all times and many never do. There must be a reason why the body would call upon a gene to express itself. Otherwise, none of us would be able to survive the onslaught of genetic expression.

So what is it that causes a gene to express itself? If you consider for a moment that diseases are just a complex of symptoms being incorporated by the body in an attempt to protect itself from tissue destruction and/or imminent death, you may begin to get a clearer understanding of what I am trying to say. Once we begin to pay attention to the reasons that a gene might express itself, we may be able to prevent that gene from releasing its code for illness.

So, again, we must look at the lifestyle and diet of the patient to discover why their body is failing to control the formation, liberation, and damage caused by free radicals. You have all heard the term “antioxidants” and for good reason. Antioxidants are the nutrients we require in order to neutralize free radicals so they can then be eliminated from the body in a harmless form. Many people in our society live on nutrient deficient diets from highly processed and refined foods that do not supply essential nutrient protection.

You should be beginning to see the pattern here. Are we treating cancer by cutting it out? Are we treating arthritis by suppressing the protective inflammation brought about by years of free radical damage? Does coronary artery bypass grafting cure cardiovascular disease? Of course not. Our goal should be in maximizing understanding of cause and effect and employing life-affirming, nutrient-rich diets with a healthy, wholesome, natural lifestyle. This is the way to “prevent” genetically coded diseases.

Meet The Staff

Dr. Mark Jensen grew up in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, a small town in the southeastern part of the state.  During his childhood, he participated in many sports such as football, basketball, baseball, track, and hockey.  He later became involved in golf and rugby as well and has been no stranger to sports injuries.  These injuries and a knack for science and biology led to an interest in health care, although it was an auto accident while attending the University of Minnesota that led to his first chiropractic experience.  So impressed by the quality of the care and the 100% natural approach of chiropractic, he accepted the challenge of becoming a Chiropractor.  Six years later in 1996, he graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minnesota with both Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees.

Following graduation, Dr. Jensen relocated from Minnesota to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where, as an associate with Hammer Chiropractic, he treated thousands of patients young and old suffering auto accident and athletic injuries, neck and low back pain, headaches, TMJ, sciatica, disc injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome, among many other conditions.  After nine years of practice in Rocky Mount, Dr. Jensen decided to open his own office in Raleigh, and in October 2006, opened Corrective Chiropractic.

Corrective Chiropractic is conveniently located in the Glenwood South area of downtown Raleigh.  This beautiful office offers state of the art technology used to detect and correct posture and spinal dysfunction, utilizing computerized thermal and muscle testing and high-speed full spine x-ray as well as spinal traction.  Dr. Jensen uses several spinal adjusting techniques (Diversified, Gonstead, and CBP) as well as soft tissue adjusting techniques (active myofascial release, trigger point therapy and electric stimulation).  Neuromuscular retraining and exercise are also used to help retrain the body to healthier patterns of function.

Corrective Chiropractic is a large chiropractic office that services many Raleigh families.    Dr. Jensen’s mission through Corrective Chiropractic is to educate and adjust as many families toward optimal health using natural chiropractic care.  To fulfill this purpose, Dr. Jensen provides education through classes in his office and at venues around town such as the YWCA and Target.  He is also active at many local health fairs and 5K races around Raleigh; he further donates his time in support of the Raleigh Rugby Club (2007 Division II National Rugby Champions) and is available to speak to local organizations and office groups about natural and proactive health care.

Continuing education is important to Dr. Jensen who consistently reads chiropractic journals for the latest news and health updates, and attends seminars throughout the country to study the latest information and techniques for the benefit of his patients.

Dr. Jensen resides in Raleigh and enjoys sports of all kinds.  In his free time, he can often be found traveling with his fiancee, Kelly or at home cooking and hanging out with their dogs.

A Gluten-Free Diet May Cure ADHD!

Many children with ADHD do not respond well to most grains, especially wheat. This could be because they have a full-blown celiac disease, which impacts an average of one out of every 133 people in the United States (although some studies have found that this number may be as high as 1 in 33 in at-risk populations) — or because they have a less obvious condition known as gluten sensitivity.

People with gluten sensitivity, which may comprise 10 percent of the U.S. population or more, experience many of the same symptoms as celiac disease causes, including headaches, fatigue, muscle, and joint pain, gas and more, but may be unaware that the culprit triggering these symptoms is wheat and other gluten-containing grains. It’s also very possible to have celiac disease and not know it … as researchers state, “in many cases, the disease may be clinically silent despite manifest small bowel mucosal lesions.”

But the psychological and behavioral symptoms of ADHD are now overlapping so often with those of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity that it’s recommended “celiac disease … be included in the ADHD symptom checklist.” This suggestion was prompted by a new study, which found people with ADHD who tested positive for celiac disease improved significantly after following a gluten-free diet for at least six months. The researchers noted:
“After initiation of the gluten-free diet, patients or their parents reported a significant improvement in their behavior and functioning compared to the period before celiac diagnosis and treatment … “

It may sound strange to you that eating a grain that wreaks havoc on your gut would manifest as symptoms related to your brain, rather than your digestion, but grains are inherently pro-inflammatory and will worsen any condition that has chronic inflammation at its root — and not just inflammation in your gut, but anywhere in your body. Chronic inflammation in your body can wreak havoc in your brain, and the importance of reducing inflammation when dealing with mental health issues is well known. It is very common for people to experience a wide variety of mental health and emotional improvements upon eliminating gluten from their diet.

Breast Milk Benefits

Ten researchers from the CDC’s National Centers for Immunization and Respiratory Disease (NCIRD) released the paper, entitled Inhibitory effect of breast milk on infectivity of live oral rotavirus vaccines, which claims the immune-boosting effects of breastmilk are a detriment to the efficacy of vaccines. The paper goes on to say that, rather than remove vaccines so that breastmilk can do its job, women should instead remove the breastmilk to allow vaccines to do their job.

The CDC researchers began their investigation by searching for answers as to why children from underdeveloped countries typically do not respond as well to the live oral rotavirus vaccine as children in developed countries typically do. They came to the conclusion that breastmilk, which is packed with immune-building immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactoferrin, lysozyme, and various other important immune factors, inhibits the vaccine from working.

Breastmilk, of course, is a young child’s lifeline. It naturally builds immunity during childhood development and provides perfect and balanced nutrition necessary for human growth. Withholding breastmilk in order to accommodate the rotavirus vaccine, as the CDC researchers suggest, is an absolutely insane notion that will deprive children of vital nutrition and proper immune development.

Notions like these are birthed from philosophies that view drugs and vaccines as being equal, or even superior, to natural food.
